Google permanently removes FAQ Schema: why now?

In May 2026, Google officially ended support for FAQ Schema rich results for all websites and removed FAQ structured data reporting from Google Search Console.
This move is significant: a few years ago, during the pandemic, Google left exceptions for highly trusted resources — government (.gov) and medical sites. Now even those exceptions are gone.

Why now?

There are several possible explanations:

  • Mass spread of myths. Recently, there was an explosion of publications (over 168,000) claiming that “FAQ Schema is critical for GEO.” This advice spread quickly, and Google may have seen a dangerous trend of overuse.
  • History repeats itself. When FAQ Schema launched in 2019, it was a fantastic SEO opportunity. Site owners could add internal links directly into FAQ answers, and they appeared in SERP. This brought extra clicks and impressions but also opened the door to mass spam.

History of FAQ Schema

FAQ Schema was once one of the most effective ways to improve site visibility. In 2019, the SEO community actively used it to boost CTR by adding links to other pages directly in answers.
However, like many other “golden” SEO opportunities, this tool quickly became a victim of abuse.

SEO abuse and consequences

Whenever there is a chance to gain an advantage in search results, it inevitably turns into a field for spam.
FAQ Schema was no exception — thousands of sites began massively generating artificial questions and answers to increase impressions.
Google gradually reduced its functionality, and now has completely shut it down. Many sites that aggressively scaled FAQ Schema were affected by the Helpful Content Update.

SEO spam and blocking FAQ Schema

Google’s cat‑and‑mouse game

This is not the first time Google has responded to the mass use of identical SEO tactics. As soon as a technique becomes too popular and is used “for GEO,” it quickly comes under scrutiny.
FAQ Schema became another example: from “too good to be true” in 2019 — to complete disappearance in 2026.

What this means for websites

  • FAQ as content remains useful. They help users, structure information, and can be valuable for other systems beyond Google.
  • But rich results should no longer be expected. Google has clearly closed this opportunity.

Conclusion

Google once again confirmed the main SEO rule: any tactic that can be massively spammed will eventually be restricted.
FAQ Schema should now be seen not as a tool for gaining extra clicks in SERP, but as a way to improve user experience on the site itself.
